BLOG: GUIDANCE ON LESBIAN/QUEER DATING & LOVE
If youâre watching The Ultimatum: Queer Love on Netflix and feeling unsettled, you're not alone. The show has sparked fascination, heartbreak, and a lot of lesbian drama. But also, for many of us, a deep ache. Thereâs something about watching queer women flail toward clarity with cameras rolling, cocktails flowing, and their hearts on the line that feels... not exactly healthy.
Â
At Conscious Girlfriend Academy, the worldâs largest online platform created for lesbians striving to have healthy & conscious relationships, weâve supported thousands of women, in 25 different countries, through breakups, breakthroughs, and everything in between. As the Academy Outreach Director and as somebody who listens to lesbian love stories day in and day out, and as a Certified Conscious Girlfriend Coach, Iâve got thoughts.
Â
In this Netflix reality series, eight lesbian couples are faced with a classic tension: one partner wants to get married, the other doesn't. So they agree to an experiment. Each couple splits up and speed-dates the others to choose a âtrial wife,â whom they move in with for three weeks in a luxury apartment. After that, they return to their original partner for another three weeks to see if the experience brought clarityâor chaos.
Â
Â
Everything.
Â
Letâs set the scene:
Whatâs presented as a journey toward clarity is, in many cases, a fast track to trauma. Watching this show, I found myself wincing more than cheering. The heartbreak felt real, but the healing didnât.
Â
If youâre in a similar place, wondering whether to stay, go, commit, or separate, please know you donât have to Netflix your way through it. Here are healthier, more conscious alternatives:
Â
1. Try Lesbian Couples Counseling Instead of Reality TV Drama
Imagine this same group of couples placed in a retreat with licensed queer-affirming therapists. No cameras. No wife-swapping. Just depth, safety, and tools for repair.
Â
2. Take Space with Intention
Sometimes clarity doesnât come from a new personâit comes from time alone. A 3-month intentional break, paired with personal reflection and support, can reveal more than any hot trial wife ever will.
Â
3. Join Conscious Girlfriend Academy

Â
4. Work 1:1 with a Certified Conscious Girlfriend Coach
Sometimes the fastest path to clarity is personalized support. Our team of compassionate, queer-centered coaches can guide you through:
Â
There are moments in the show that tugged at me, like AJâs soothing presence as she listened empathically to potential future wives, or Maganâs ability to find her voice, in spite of an internalized homophobic family who interfered in her ability to be whole in her relationship with Dayna. But mostly, I watched women floundering in setups designed for friction, not healing, like Maritaâs agonizing, repetitive pleading of Ashley to be more of a romantic. And I couldnât help but think:
Â
There is no need to throw your heart into a high-drama reality show experiment, on or off-screen.
Â
You deserve better. We all do.
Â
If You're Watching The Queer Ultimatum and Feeling Triggered⌠You're Not Alone.
Â
Youâre not broken for wanting more love or more clarity. But reality TV isnât reality, and it doesnât have to be your roadmap. Letâs build something better together.
